Risaralda · Chocó
Ten tons of food for the villages around Pereira.
Our trucks carry one thousand family relief packages, with medicine and construction supplies alongside them, to communities in Risaralda still living with the damage from the earthquake. One package costs $50 and weighs ten kilos.
What is in a package, and what it costs
- 1,000family packages
- 10 tonsof food, in the packages alone
- 10 kgin each package
- $50the cost of one package
Each package holds cooking oil, rice, pasta, beans and panela — staples that keep, that a family can cook with whatever they still have, and that do not require refrigeration in places where the power is not reliable. Medicine and construction supplies travel with them but are counted separately; the ten tons refers to the food.
Where we have already been
In late August we worked in Quibdó, Chocó, alongside Iglesia Centro de Fe y Esperanza, and together reached 120 families. That number is 120 because that is how many households received a package, counted by the local church that handed them out.
Chocó is reached by road with difficulty and parts of the region are reached by river or not at all. Working through a congregation that is already there is not a shortcut — it is the only way the aid arrives at the right doors rather than the nearest ones.
How a distribution works
- A local church or community leader tells us what is needed. We do not decide from Medellín what a village in Risaralda is short of.
- Packages are assembled and counted. Same contents, same weight, so nobody receives visibly less than their neighbour.
- They travel by truck, and where the road ends, by boat. Freight is a real cost and we account for it separately from the food.
- The local partner distributes and records who received. They know the households; we do not.
- We report the count back. That is where numbers like “120 families” come from.
